A genuine escape from Bali's crowds without the remoteness of eastern Indonesia. Lembongan has a laid-back, slightly upscale village feel; Penida is rawer and less developed, mostly visited on day trips for the diving and Instagram cliff views. Neither is a party scene.
Open Water sufficient for Lembongan and gentler Penida sites. Advanced OW recommended for Crystal Bay mola dives (cold water, surge, depth). Nearest hyperbaric chamber is in Bali (Sanglah Hospital, ~1 hr by fast boat + transfer).
Penida's open-ocean sites (Crystal Bay, Manta Point) can have strong, cold upwellings and surge. Lembongan is more sheltered with gentler currents, genuinely beginner-accessible.
Best diving Apr–Oct (dry season, strong currents, mola mola season Jul–Oct). Lembongan is diveable year-round with gentler conditions. Jan–Mar has reduced visibility and choppier crossings.

Nusa Penida is famous for two things: mola mola (ocean sunfish) in cold upwelling season (Jul–Oct) and year-round mantas at Manta Point. The open-ocean sites attract large pelagics that rarely visit Bali directly. Lembongan's sheltered bays offer gentle coral gardens with turtles, reef fish, and occasional reef sharks, perfect for divers who want big-animal sightings without Penida's demanding conditions.
Terrain
Cold upwellings at Crystal Bay bring mola to cleaning stations. Not guaranteed, but this is the world's most reliable spot.
Manta Point runs year-round, multiple mantas per dive is common.
Blue-corner style sites on Penida's south coast attract schooling fish and occasional sharks.
Gamat Bay and Mangrove Point offer easy, turtle-rich diving all year.

Shallow macro dive under the mangrove roots with nudibranchs, frogfish, and pipefish. Great third dive or a relaxed low-energy morning option.
Fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida, 30–45 min, multiple operators daily ($15–25 each way). Most dive shops pick up from the pier. Many divers day-trip from Bali; others stay 2–5 nights on the islands.

Lembongan: good small-island infrastructure. ATMs (can run out on weekends), decent restaurants, reliable electricity. Penida: roads are rough (bike or ojek only), fewer ATMs, more basic facilities overall. Both islands are developing rapidly, expect construction in popular areas.
Telkomsel 4G works well on Lembongan. Penida has patchy coverage inland. Reasonable WiFi at most guesthouses and cafes on both islands. Fast boat back to Bali takes 30–45 min if needed.
Cold upwellings at Penida's open-ocean sites catch divers off guard, watch your depth at Crystal Bay; current can push you deep fast. Nearest recompression chamber is Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar, Bali (~1 hr total transfer). Most dive shops carry emergency oxygen.
Jul–Oct: mola mola season + Bali high season = Penida is crowded. Day-trip boats from Sanur queue at popular sites. Arrive early or stay on the island to beat day-tripper timing. Book dive packages 2–4 weeks ahead in this window.
